Mediterranean diet and the risk of COVID-19

The Mediterranean diet has been called one of the healthiest diets in the world. So much so that it is believed to be the only diet that increases longevity as well as overall satiety. This epidemiological study indicates that a high adherence to this diet may be associated with a lower risk of COVID-19. The reasons for this include the lower glycemic index of this dietary pattern, low overall cholesterol, adequate micronutrient intake and higher levels of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids rather than saturated fatty acids. This diet promotes immune enhancing and anti-inflammatory effects in the body.

This is the first longitudinal epidemiological study to relate a dietary pattern to COVID-19.
